Artist’s Statement

When I first envisioned an exhibit, it was, in large part an installation of the work developing into the art on display. Most exhibits are presenting finished work. I’m much more interested in the process – how did the work happen? The research, the thought process, the decisions, the development – those are the bones that fascinate me.

That, I have come to realize is the guts of my work. How I got there is more important than an end result. Needing an end result is paralyzing.

I work best in series – the eternal “What happens if…? and follow that. Oh! Add in “I don’t know what I am doing!” is now a thrust forward, not a barrier to be overcome.

The original concept for an installation exhibit was not feasible from a presentation perspective. The solution was to collage on paper that could later be assembled into a concertina sketchbook. This is a perfect solution for me. I don’t do well with conventional sketchbooks, my visual thoughts become scattered. I use a wide variety of paper, including scraps. I also need a visually larger picture. It all fits together better – like a puzzle of sorts. I then move into bigger pieces with more ease without the fear of missing key information.
