2020 Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art, Student Exhibition

Update: March 18, 2020 – the Kitimat Museum & Archives has closed to the public as to take precautionary measures with the Covid-19 pandemic.

The exhibition showcases the artwork of students completing their fine art certification and diplomas at the Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art, at the Coast Mountain College in Terrace, B.C.

The Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art, at the Coast Mountain College in Terrace, B.C., brings all nations together in the pursuit of higher education and sets new standards for aspiring artists. It is the only school of its kind in Canada, focusing on traditional First Nations Pacific Northwest Coast art with a view to developing fine art skills.

The school offers the First Nations Fine Arts program, instructed and mentored by world-renowned artists Dempsey Bob (Tahltan/Tlingit), Stan Bevan (Tahltan/Tlingit/Tsimshian), and Ken McNeil (Tahltan/Tlingit/Nisga’a.)  Visiting artists, dignitaries and cultural advocates enhance the learning environment with their knowledge, wisdom and experience.

Coast Mountain College created the Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art to honour, recognize and continue the legacy of Haida artist Freda Diesing. She was a master carver, painter, tireless educator and champion of First Nations art and culture.

This student exhibition runs from March 6 to 28, 2020.
